With all the mentions that Cam Newton received for deciding to get up during a presser, refusing to talk to the media after a loss in the Super Bowl, with all the disappointment and disapproval that Cam received, the hatred spewed violently on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and other social media outlets for Newton not caring enough to give the myopic, self aggrandizing, narcissistic media the time of day to answer a few questions; I cannot wait to see what you will think of this.
America, I love you. I was born in you, I make my living in you, and I sincerely and deeply care for your well being. But sometimes I am afraid of your direction. Sometimes I wonder whether you care for celebrities more than you care for the poor folks in Flint. Sometimes I wonder if you care at all for anybody other than yourself. But then sometimes you prove me wrong, getting enough of your people together to make a difference in the lives of those who matter.
Today I read something that disturbed me, America. I wanted to bring it to your attention. Tamir Rice’s family has been charged $500 for the hospital ride their son took after being fatally shot by Cleveland City Police officers. He was 12 years old. America, I hope that this disturbs you as much as it disturbs me and as much as it did when Cam Newton refused to answer questions about the Super Bowl.
